My Utah Jazz Playoff Podcast with Ryan from Hoops Addict. With a few random thoughts...

I was asked to participate in a playoff podcast by Ryan at Hoops Addict. You can hear the podcast, which was picked up by USA Today and NBA.com, here.

(CB Jack: I was completely sarcastic with my Chris Mihm comment, I don't think Ryan caught that. lol)

Kurt from Forum Blue and Gold also participated for all you Lakers fans. Ryan did a great job. As Booner would say, sorry if I sounded like Debbie Downer, but we held the call right after the Jazz had lost.

Random Thoughts:

Boozers Hammy was right on the money with his post below. I can't say that the Lakers really won this game, but more that the Jazz lost it. If Matt Harpring would have pulled himself out of the game we could be up 1-0. He played horrible. Between his play, Kyle Korvers inability to his anything outside of a free throw, and CJ Miles committing the worst foul in NBA history, the Jazz were right in this game. I believe I counted 6 straight possessions where KK and Harp screwed the pooch and missed 15 foot jumpers and layups.

The officiating crew was poor at best. Both teams have to agree that the calls were extremely inconsistent. Touch fouls, followed by no calls. I know it's the playoffs and games need to be played out, but I just want to see consistency...on both ends of the floor.

From Forum Blue and Gold: To Utah fans complaining about Phil complaining about the refs: Welcome to playoff basketball. You can influence the refs through the media, every coach knows this and does this.

CB Jack's take: Apparently Jerry Sloan missed the memo because I've never seen him use the media as vehicle for complaining about officiating.

CBJ - on the podcast, were you being sarcastic when you brought up Chris Mihm as a factor on the Lakers? I mean seriously, I think his butt is glued to the bench. He has hardly played all year and hasn't gotten off the bench in the playoffs.

If it was sarcasm (my guess is that it was), I don't think Ryan got it..

Great job representing Our Utah Jazz, dude. I especially liked your explanation of the situation with D-Fish. I couldn't agree more with your logic.

M. D. said...

Ha ha. I was totally sarcastic. And you're right even my wife was all "I think he took you serious on the Chris Mihm thing..."

Oh well. I'm a little sarcastic by nature. I would assume anyone listening could see that.

But then again...never assume...because, well you know why.

I am pretty sure Phil was complaining about the inconsistency of the calls not the one-sided nature. Much like you were complaining about as well. But spin it as you see fit....

WEll, perhaps I'll have to take pslakerfan's place- don't worry, I play nice.

You guys are an extremly worthy opponent. Utah fought well yesterday, and this series is going to go the distance, methinks.

Deron almost had a triple double....but he took many, many shots to get there. I don't expect his shooting percentage to be so low coming around- I give Fisher credit for hounding him all night long.

Kudos to Okur- I'll admit, I'm not sure where he came fgrom, cause I totally didn't expect it. HE did a nice job on Pau (although, when 18 points is a bad night, I'm not entirely saddened)

Want to share some of those rebounds with us? Please? God knows you have more then enough....

you guys may not like it, but the biggest x factor is how much you're going to let Kobe destroy you. Kobe gets to the line a lot with non-physical teams, a physical team will let him parade to the line all night long. Whoever's guarding him HAS to keep the hands off. Body him up, make sure he doesn't blow by you, and make him settle for jumpers. Only way you're going to stop him.

Hated the officiating, even on our side. Joey crawford is an Ass, why is he still officiating again?

Note to the Utah defense-
Leaving Sasha open is a BAD idea. He can hit them now.

Note to Laker Defense-
GRAB A FREAKING REBOUND, FOR EFFS SAKE.

Gotta go, but I'll be around later. Can't wait for wendsday, should be fun.

You guys do some nice stuff here, keep it up!

Jeff

Thanks for the comment Jeff. Oh, and we don't get offended if you are biased. I mean, look at all of us. Most Jazz fans are still pettitioning the NBA to review Jordan's push off in the NBA Finals years ago. In fact, some of them wear the NBA Champs shirts they printed before the Jazz lost.
Anyhow, that was a rough game for the Jazz but the most promising part was watching them cut into that huge lead L.A. had. I am about as hard on the Jazz as anyone but seeing them do that actually had me happy and made it easier to get over that loss. Now, I have two weeks to rest before game two.

Brock Kassing said...

C.B.: Great job on the podcast man. I laughed at the Chris Mihm comment. Did he really think you were serious? Wow. Well, you were wearing your Jason Hart jersey during the podcast so I can see how he could think that.
Good work man.

Lakerfanjeff, nice to have a little more Laker blood here, but be careful being nice still gets you bitchslapped here. I know I tried and I got slapped with the "rapist" comment. However we seem to have made some amends.....

I'm a frequent reader of the LA Times Laker blog, but I've never commented. There are way too many comments for me to attempt to read them or to think that someone would read mine. I always like to see what the other team is saying, though, so I will definitely keep checking out the posts here. Wednesday's game is going to be great. Look for Pau to get more involved and for "The Machine" (I can't help but laugh everytime I think of Sasha calling himself that) to get under some skin.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I can almosty guarentee that Sasha's going to get a flagrent from SOMEONE during the course of this series. He'll piss someone off, mark my words.

And it's not nice, it's more like....civilized :)

M. D. said...

You are telling me that Sasha calls himself "The Machine"?

Please confirm as I have a great post coming if that is the case.

The machine...ha love it.

Anonymous said...

My bad. Apparently Sasha didn't come up with the nickname himself. This is from an article in the LA Times back in March...

"TRIED TO get to the bottom of who came up with the nickname Machine for the Lakers' Sasha Vujacic.

Checked with Lakers TV guy, Joel Meyers, who did a lot of hemming and hawing, well, more than usual. He said both he and his partner Stu Lantz came up with it together. Never took them for Siamese twins before.

Apparently, neither did Lantz. "I came up with it," Lantz said. "And then Joel ran with it. I used it once, and never again."

As for Vujacic, he said Machine is just fine with him, but then Ronny Turiaf interrupted to say Vujacic is also known as Alexander.

"That's my first name," Vujacic said, but he isn't happy with it."

It's still funny, though.

Anonymous said...

yup, Sasha gave himself the nickname "The Machine"....

Anonymous said...

The Machine is Kyle Korver's idol. Maybe Korver should watch Sasha. He plays D, and actually does what he is supposed to do when he is put on the floor. Hit Shots.

Anonymous said...

oh by the way.....
CB Jack...

"The Lakers didn't win that game as much as the Jazz lost it."

That would imply that the Jazz were actually in the game. What game were you watching? The lost some focus and let the Jazz creep back a little. The Jazz made one run, and were NEVER seriously a threat to take the lead for good. The Lakers WON that game pretty handily. The Jazz looked overmatched. It was their hustle from guys like Okur, Brewer, and Millsap that got them as close as they got. But it is also because of no threat players like Brewer, Millsap, and Miles, that won't let you guys truly compete. The Jazz are a nice team, but that's all. Deron will get his. Boozer will hustle to get his. But can you really rely on Boozer, and do you really think Mehmet will repeat that performance? AK-47 will disappear, as usual. Then what is left? Even if the Jazz play equal to the Lakers, you still do not have one answer for Kobe Bryant, who can score at wil on anybody on Utah, and get to the line in crucial situations down the stretch.

M. D. said...

The Machine is a dux.

Unless you're 6'5 275 and can bench 400+, don't call yourself the machine.

He is just lucky Kobe is allowing him to hang on his jock strap. Once he leaves LA, he's another nobody.

Korver can't play D. Good point. I think you're the first person to bring that up?

Truth: The Machine flat outplayed Korver. We know it. Thanks for rubbing it in.

M. D. said...

Wondadouche,

Yes. I stand by what I said. The Jazz were clearly in a position to retake the lead. There was a momentum shift taking place and Harpring and Korver ruined it for us.

I guarantee Okur will have a repeat performance. If face, I guarantee he will average 18 and 12 this series.

I also still stand by the fact that comparing the benches for both teams is a push. Our boys will show up. Don't worry. Of course your bench will outplay ours, you were on your home court! Benches always play better on the home court.

Kobe? No answer aside from stealing his STD antibiotics and letting a rash set it. That would be our best defense.

M. D. said...

I hope I didn't offend anyone with an STD with my last comment. My bad.

Anonymous said...

I am offended.

Anonymous said...

me too.

Anonymous said...

What do you want me to "add" in his prescription medication, and how much will you pay for it?

Anonymous said...

Wow. Name calling? I understand your frustration after the 1st of 4 losses, but what bench? Kyle Korver needs to hit a shot. i'm sure he will, maybe, but this is now 2 games against the Lakers where he hasn't had a pulse. Ronny Brewer? Man, he has the ugliest shot in the league. I'd rather Marcus Camby shoot his ugly shot. Umm.....who else? D.J. Miles? Uhh, no. The one player I respect is Paul Millsap. He hustles, and scores more than he should.

Don't worry, the Machine will hit his shots on the road. Your guys will show up one game this series. the one game the Jazz might win.

Your home court was breached by Houston, and the Lakers have beaten you at home handily last time they ran through Utah.

Anonymous said...

I'm alright with it.

Anonymous said...

CB Jack,

Don't worry about the STD comment. I'm pretty sure that neither Kobe, nor his wife, nor his children read this blog, and the rest of us don't care if you spew some libel.

What I WOULD worry about - if I were you - is a little bit of self-delusion. I just don't see how you can say the Jazz LOST this game instead of the Lakers WINNING it. I played this type of mental game myself when the Lakers were getting owned by the Suns last year. It just doesn't work. What you're trying to say is that GIVEN all the mistakes the Lakers were making in this particular game, the Jazz would just need to make a few more shots to win. But the next question you have to ask is how would the Lakers have reacted if more Jazz shots had gone in? Don't you think Phil would have taken more timeouts? (Remember that play they set up for Odom in the 4th that left your Jazz stunned?) Don't you think Kobe would get his defender to lunge at him on EVERY play (instead of most) and shoot free throws to slow down the game?

Most importantly, you have to realize that the Lakers were kind of rusty yesterday, especially in the 1st and 4th quarters. With 2 days in between games instead of 6, you can't seriously hope that this will happen again. So if you're trying to use the 3rd and 4th quarters as predictors for Game 2, I think you should be a little more careful.

CB Jack,

On D.Fish: They fly to NY every 2 MONTHS (not weeks) for checkups. That's where the doctor is who invented the procedure. But they also get more frequent checkups and treatment in LA.

Not only did you NOT have the facts, but you took the liberty to invent new ones.

You're not necessarily classless for booing him. But you are classless for not even giving it a second thought.

Seriously, what did your owner expect when releasing D.Fish? That he would never play again? It's not like D.Fish pulled out a gun and threatened his way out of SLC. If your guys are upset about the money, you should have demanded that he or his next team foot the bill. But no, that's not the Utah way. Apparently, the Utah way is to do good but then wallow in self-pity and call in the press.

Keep booing, pal.

I am possitive that the World Class Huntsman Cancer Center here in Utah could have done a bang up job for the check-ups on Tatum and last time I checked Salt Lake is closer to New York than LA is. I might be wrong because my three moms were never good at math during my home schooling out at the ranch. We still pray for the speedy recovery of Tatum and boo the hell out of players who might have used their sick daughter as a reason to leave our team. Every last one you fans in LA would have done the same thing except you can't get to the stadium on time to boo during the introductions. So dont be layin hate on us because we care enough about our team to show up and boo the players who left to play for the enemy.

Anonymous said...

Boozer's Hammy,

Yes, "using his sick daughter as a reason to leave your team". That's exactly what Fish was doing. The fact that his daughter got cancer was probably the best news he could have gotten. It was the perfect opportunity to leave. That must have been his first thought. He was probably thrilled at the news. Man, lucky guy. Just when he thought there was no way out, this wonderful opportunity arises!!!

Seriously, your post is beyond ridiculous. Don't ever presume to know what is in someone's heart when it comes to the welfare of their child. It paints an ugly picture of you that you hang out there for all the world to see.

And if you got off the ranch much, you'd know that it is a lot easier to get a flight from LA to NY than it is from Salt Lake.

Fisher left the Lakers at one point, too. I don't remember him getting boos when he left for more money, and I think that the reason he left the Jazz is even less of a reason. I actually hope he gets booed in Utah. That should fire up #24. There's a reason why our road record is the mirror image of your road record.

The Machine said...

Maybe I should finish one sentence before starting a new one...I meant to say that the reason Fish left the Jazz is even less of a reason to boo him than for the reason he left the Lakers. I would boo pretty much any Laker that switched teams on us, but I could never bring myself to booing 0.4

D.Wack? We traded him in 87-88 season.

D.Will on the other hand? Here is what Fisher had to say about D.Will: "I think probably what confused him was because of how old I am," the 34 year old said. "I am so slow, when he fakes I don't go for it because I don't react so fast, so I still end up infront of him."

Why didn't Laker fans boo him? Simple. They are not as good as fans as Jazz fans are.

MJ totally pushed off Bryon Russell.

Funny thing is I saw Bryon Russell at a mall several years ago, and I told him that I and others knew that MJ pushed off on that play, but he seemed almost apathetic and slightly defensive, saying "What do I care what other people think?" In my mind, I was trying to give him props, saying 'look I know you got fouled', but he the way he reacted was almost like I had insulted him somehow like, "I don't need YOU, mall-goer to tell me that." He might be right in that respect.

Didn't Fisher getting released from his contract by the Jazz relieve a lot of salary cap pressure? The Jazz traded for him, he came in and helped mentor a young team, and then due to his daughters cancer he asked the Jazz to release him, which they were happy to do because he was way overpaid to be a back-up point guard. Things really couldn't have worked out any better for the Jazz organization.
Jazz fans will get to complain about the Lakers free throw attempts all series because the Jazz foul - a lot. They have fouled (a lot) for the last several years. If part of your game plan is to push, grab and hold constantly it seems a little petulant to complain about the other teams free throw attempts.
Also the Jazz will problay have a double digit lead in rebounds in every game this series because the Lakers (except Odom and Kobe) are lousy rebounders, they leak out early to get easy transition baskets (watch Walton be an effective offensive rebounder, but run the other way when it comes to defensive boards) and the Lakers defense is going to force lots of long twos instead of the layups the Jazz like to get, which in turn will provide ample opportunities for offensive rebounds.
Williams is a great pg and Sloan is a great coach, but the Lakers are the better team (we also have a pretty good sg and coach on our bench). Lakers in four.

I've been going between this blog and the Forum Blue and Gold one to read both fans' side of the series and at least they refrain from profanity, name calling, moderation of opinions, and have actual adult discourse... and if that is indicative of Lakers' fans and this is indicative of Jazz fans, well then thanks for turning one of the enemies into a rooting interest!)

From frequenting blogs like Deadspin, Hardwood Paroxysm, With Leather, etc. I never really understood why MSM types like Bissinger, Wilbon, etc. all bitched about the hate and vitriol regurgitated by blogs, but I guess I see their point now. So, congratulations on giving "blogs" as a whole (because they are always referenced as all being alike in MSM) a bad name. You should be really proud of yourself for that.

1. Because I can.
2. Don't drop the F-Bomb.
3. We rescinded our comments about Kobe's actions so don't bring them back up.

1. Pathetic, really pathetic. "Because I can", that is what I tell my daughter, grow up, seriously.
2. I don't ever drop the F-bomb, so don't give me that crap.
3. All I said was that Karl Malone was guilty of the same thing. Obviously the truth doesn't get through on this blog, MY BAD....

We Laker fans are trying to have a little friendly Laker-Jazz discussion and you guys can't handle it. Grow up, have a little self respect and enjoy the friendly banter. But playing the "because I can" card is pathetic and you know it. If you just want to babble to your own kind, go ahead and do it, but don't expect the rest of the world to respect you, because they won't.

P.S. I bet if by some miracle you guys win game 2, you will all start taking the high road and start talking basketball and get rid of the personal attacks. Who wants to bet?????

Stay classy SLC, stay classy.

Elle knows what's up. Neutral Blazer fans never lie.

Now on to basketball matters: a question for Utah fans. What do you expect Sloan to stress more for Game 2: committing fewer fouls, or knocking down more open shots?

I know both of them are important, but I was wondering what you would be more upset about as the coach.

I don't expect Sloan to turn down the fouls. It's like he thinks it will deter people from taking it to the rim. Kobe can just kill you with that thinking because he's such a great free throw shooter.

As for knocking down more shots. He probably won't even mention it. He figures the players know they missed shots so why does he need to bring it up?

I think the shots will come. The Jazz just need more paint two's and less non-paint two's. They were settling for a lot of non-paint two's in Game 1. When they made a run it was because they were attacking more and finding their bread and butter of paint two's.

Of course, if Harpring plays more than 20 minutes, it's all over anyway.

Thanks for the feedback Elle.

Harpring needs to cut down on the funnelcake

When do you think Sloan will realize that the hack-a-Kobe strategy isn't working?

He already said that they fouled too much.

It's even sad again tonight. The calls in the game are sickening. They aren't consistent or on both ends of the floor. We all know the NBA and everyone else knows its much better business for LA to advance over Utah, but I mean-make it a little less obvious...
